"I can deal with that later"

"I can deal with that later"

Nobody wants to deal with a Will. It is morbid, creepy, and something assumed to happen much later in life. I personally have put it off for years thinking there is no point because I did not have much. This kind of thinking can put a huge burden on loved ones if you die unexpectantly. Your passing is hard enough on loved ones.  Do not make it harder than it has to be.

The purpose of a Will is to make sure everything of yours is handled in the way that you would like.  Family fighting over what should be done is the last thing anyone would want.  A detailed plan to follow will help to minimize the stress.

Thinking about all the "what if's" is one of the best benefits of drafting a Will.  Example "if I die, who will pay for the funeral cost?". The average funeral cost between $8,000 to $10,000 according to a PBS article.  Do you have $8,000 dedicated to this?  If not, then who is going to pay for it?  I hope your answer is not, "I don't care.  Someone else can figure it out after I die."

Also, during the process, you will discover things that the Will does not have a final say in.  Like retirement accounts or home titles.  Retirement accounts will go to who is listed as the beneficiary.  Title ownership always has a claim regardless of what the Will says.  Have you been divorced?  You might want to check to make sure your ex is not a beneficiary or still listed on any of your titles.

Lastly, there are plenty of free or cheap services out there to help you through the process but a lawyer is always recommended.  If you do not want to pay for a lawyer, that is fine.  Just make sure you do something because it is always better than nothing.

You never know when your number will be called.  Do not assume that you will always be able to deal with it later.
