What does it mean to reap what you sow?

seeds-1302793Most of us have heard the saying "you reap what you sow" before. This may mean something different to everyone. I am going to try and break it down in its basic form to plant a seed for thought (get it).

In farming, to sow is to plant a seed for growth. To reap is to gather or take. Over time, a healthy and abundant crop will produce because the farmer takes the time to sow the seeds properly. This is done by preparing the soil, providing nutrients, proper watering, and having patience. Please do not speed read past the words patience and over time. It would be foolish of the farmer to think the crop would be ready to give abundantly after only a week since planting. A grape vine can take two years to produce fruit. Once it begins to provide fruit, that single vine can produce fruit for over 30 years.

The "seeds" in our life come in various shapes and sizes. Some seeds should never be planted, but that is not the topic for today. Other "seeds", like money, are constantly blowing in and out of our wallets. Every time you spend a dollar you are either planting seeds to reap new fruit in the future, or you are allowing the wind (aka feelings, instant gratification, selfishness, or fill in the blank) to carry your hard earned seeds to be planted by someone else.

Next time when you are about to throw your seeds away on a shirt, shoes, or name your item-- think about what good is possible through this seed if I would take the time to plant it right.
